In My Mailbox – New Books This Week (17)

March 27, 2011

In My Mailbox is a shared posting idea run by Kristi at The Story Siren (read all about it here: In My Mailbox) for bloggers to share the books they’ve gotten that week to help publicize as many titles as possible. IMM is a semi-regular feature here on Teach 8 YA Book Blog to let my students know the books to be looking for on the classroom shelves and for blog readers to know what book reviews to anticipate along with building excitement about new titles coming out. All titles link to goodreads so you can add books to your “to-read” list.

For Review (reviewing for Book Divas)

THE IRON DAUGHTER by  Julie Kagawa
Book 2 in the Iron Fey series. I really need to get going on reading this series – I’ve heard fabulous things about it!

WILL WORK FOR PROM DRESS by Aimee Ferris
Sounds like a super-cute read, and we’re getting close to that time of year.

Received

WAR AND WATERMELON by Rich Wallace
Sounds like an interesting middle grades historical during Woodstock that should grab boys’ attention. Thanks, Penguin Young Readers!

CHIME by Franny Billingsley
Thanks Dial / Penguin Books!

Chime was so unique. I hope you and your students enjoy it. I also want to read The Iron Daughter since I enjoyed The Iron King so much. Happy reading and good luck with your dystopian book club….sounds like a lot of fun!

Chime looks excellent. I can't wait to read it.

I have The Iron King, but haven't read it yet. I haven't really gotten into the fae genre, but I hear nothing but great things about this one.

Years ago, I read another book by Franny Billingsley that I just loved (The Folk Keeper). I keep hearing good things about Chime. Looking forward to your review!

I just read Chime and it was fantastic! Very funky and quirky. I've heard great things about the Iron Fey series, too, but haven't read it yet. Gotta get on that!

I've heard fabulous things about the Iron Fey series too. I haven't read that, but it's definitely a series I'd love to finally read!

School's out for summer & the weather was perfect School's out for summer & the weather was perfect for reading outside this weekend. Couldn't resist choosing this YA romantasy touted as "Taylor Swift's 'Vigilante Sh*t' meets The Gilded Age" for my first summer break read!

Finding moments of joy where I can. There are two Finding moments of joy where I can. There are two days left of this school year. A year that started with sitting in the corner crying due to the overwhelm of the massive task ahead of us to get ready for the first day upon walking in & seeing the state of the library after summer renovation work. A year of ups & downs & all arounds. All the way to today when we had the giddy joy of our brand new booktrucks being delivered. They are pretty & sturdy & glide smoothly & elevate the look of the whole library while making our lives easier. Farewell old, dented, wobbly, rusty, beige carts. IYKYK. Bahama blue, turquoise, teal, sundrop, & calming lavender are taking over. Thank you for the colorful options, helpful customer service, & quick response shipping before school ends @demcoinc!!

Love this reminder of the power of children's lite Love this reminder of the power of children's literature from the introduction in Show & Tell: Exploring the Fine Art of Children’s Book Illustration! Reading it this weekend to continue building background knowledge for my work on the Caldecott Committee this year.

"In this regard, we truly suffer from an embarrassment of riches. Children's books have never looked better or been more
important. They are one of the few quiet places left where a child can go to be alone, and to travel worlds past, present, and future. They are often the first place children discover poetry and art, honor and loyalty, right and wrong, sadness and hope. And it is there between the pages that children discover the power of their own imaginations. They are indeed a dress rehearsal for life."
