A Tale of Two Besties.🫶🏻 One on Caldecott. One on A Tale of Two Besties.🫶🏻
One on Caldecott. One on Newbery.
Taking a train to Chicago for the final in-person deliberations before the Youth Media Awards are announced on Monday! Always conference roomies & we just so happened to be serving on these major committees in the same year.
Though we're not able to talk about any of the specifics or details with each other (confidentiality is a big component of this process), we are able to better understand each other's experience & mental state at the moment by sharing this process in this way.
Our brains are tired, but our spirits are high. A couple long days ahead, but we're almost done. And the t-shirts are on point.
Let's do this! 📚

We're almost there! The Caldecott Awards will be a We're almost there! The Caldecott Awards will be announced on Monday. The committee meets one final time this weekend to make the decision. It has all been leading up to this. A year of reading. Hundreds of illustrated children's books. Hours and hours of discussion. One winning title.
I might be just as eager as everyone else to find out what book that will be!!

Do you know about the Coretta Scott King Book Awar Do you know about the Coretta Scott King Book Awards? You may hear mostly about the Newbery & Caldecott, but there are more ALA Youth Media Awards to be aware of. It may be MLK Day, but without CSK, this day wouldn't even be.
Let's honor the work of the woman behind the man also & recognize the ongoing work of African American kidlit creators making outstanding books about the African American experience that belong in our schools & libraries for young people to read.

This is the bulk of my time & thinking at the mome This is the bulk of my time & thinking at the moment. This is what is consuming the majority of my brain power. This is the entirety of the Caldecott criteria that guides the decisions. All of the information from the manual on one page for me to reference throughout the past year.
And we are now just ONE week away from the committee knowing the outcome of our months of work. I'm exhausted & invigorated & excited & I can't believe it's finally almost here.

This is not the America we were promised as childr This is not the America
we were promised as children
that we had to stand up
hands over hearts
and pledge allegiance to.
This is not the USA
we were led to believe
was built on ideals
enshrined in those
founding documents.
This is not united
when any are treated
inhumanely
less than
unworthy of
life
liberty
happiness.
This is not the country
we should be.
And those in charge
seem to do
nothing
to get us back to
common decency
respect
empathy
care
for our fellow
human beings.
That is the
United States of America
we deserve
to pursue.
