I am always searching for picture books for my school library and to read aloud for #classroombookday that will show students that they matter. The kinds of books that affirm their existence, validate their beings, and support their lived experiences. Books that remind kids that we believe in them and support them, and that even though they are little, the space they take up is theirs to make a difference with. And to know who they are, what they believe, how they want to be – it all matters.

Christian Robinson is a well-known Caldecott Awarded & Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honored Black illustrator in the children’s literature world. And now, with this second book that he illustrated AND wrote (the first was ANOTHER), he has created a gem of a book that is what we all need right now. A book that reminds kids that they matter whether they are big or small, first or last, follow the crowd, fall down, are old or young. It’s a book without much text – a quiet book that will help kids see that they matter no matter how others see them or they see themselves. The illustrations bring joy, empathy, and love to the pages. And right now, that is the message I hope all kids will get to see and hear.

So on this release day of his newest picture book, I celebrate that Christian Robinson shares his gift freely with us all so it can positively impact children. And I celebrate that this book, YOU MATTER, exists for us to share with kids.

Young readers will be drawn into the luminous illustrations inviting them to engage with the world in a new way and see how everyone is connected, and that everyone matters.

I’m so thrilled to be sharing Ben Hatke‘s newest book, LITTLE ROBOT with you today! It is a fabulous, charming story enhanced by its nearly wordless graphic format. Thank you to First Second for providing a review copy and a copy for giveaway!

When a little girl finds an adorable robot in the woods, she presses a button and accidentally activates him for the first time. Now, she finally has a friend. But the big, bad robots are coming to collect the little guy for nefarious purposes, and it’s all up to a five-year-old armed only with a wrench and a fierce loyalty to her mechanical friend to save the day!
#1 New York Times Bestselling author Ben Hatke brings his signature sweetness to a simple, moving story about friendship and overcoming fears that will appeal to readers of all ages.

My thoughts:
Ben Hatke’s illustrations are charming, and this nearly wordless graphic novel with chapters is an entertaining read of friendship and determination. The story of a girl who goes on adventures with her tool belt and comes across a lost robot hooks the reader right away. Adventure begins and suspense is built when we see the robot ends up being hunted by a larger scarier robot trying to get him back. The main character’s ingenuity with mechanics and fixing things has a great message. Not only are the illustrations just plain fun to look at, the story itself is a delight. I so appreciate that the young girl is a tinkerer and engineer. Little Robot is about exploration, ingenuity, technology, and friendship. A strong addition to a classroom graphic novel collection.

But in a single moment, all her plans for the future are thwarted when her twin sister, Bay, makes an unexpected decision, stranding Rio Below. My Thoughts:
I was very much looking forward to Ally Condie‘s follow up to the Matched series, and although I wasn’t as enamored with Atlantia as I was the first series, I still enjoyed reading it for it’s uniqueness and heart and engaging writing style. I will definitely be handing this off to students this fall. It seems a bit of a quieter book (perhaps having to do with the underwater location), and has themes of religion and persecution and acceptance and trust and truth and family and determination and corruption and environmentalism and self-reliance woven throughout within a well-built world.

Because I ended up with a second advanced copy of Ally Condie’s new book, Atlantia, in the mail (Thanks, Penguin Classroom!!), I’m giving away an early ARC to one reader.
The future rests on her, if there can even be a future for the chimaera in war-ravaged Eretz.

Common enemy, common cause.

When Jael’s brutal seraph army trespasses into the human world, the unthinkable becomes essential, and Karou and Akiva must ally their enemy armies against the threat. It is a twisted version of their long-ago dream, and they begin to hope that it might forge a way forward for their people.
And, perhaps, for themselves. Toward a new way of living, and maybe even love.
But there are bigger threats than Jael in the offing. A vicious queen is hunting Akiva, and, in the skies of Eretz … something is happening. Massive stains are spreading like bruises from horizon to horizon; the great winged stormhunters are gathering as if summoned, ceaselessly circling, and a deep sense of wrong pervades the world.

At the very barriers of space and time, what do gods and monsters dream of? And does anything else matter?

In honor of the release of this final book in the series, I’m re-sharing my recommendation for book one in case you missed it, so you can start at the beginning and go on this stunning and shattering journey from the first words.

My original recommendation for DAUGHTER OF SMOKE & BONE:
Laini Taylor’s writing is beautiful, but in that way that it doesn’t jump out at you and take you out of the story, it is just woven subtly in as part of the story and you don’t realize how beautiful it is until you get to a stopping point and heave a deep sigh of relaxation from having enjoyed the writing and been lost and wrapped up completely in the world she created. The artistry with which she weaves storylines together between the two different main characters and between the present with flashbacks of backstory is enticing. There is a twist in the plot about two-thirds of the way through that almost changes the books into a different story, but it’s of utmost importance to our understanding and works so well the way Laini has written it.

And the setting…the book mainly takes pace in Prague and in Laini’s deft hand, the mystery, history, and beauty of this city lives and breathes its own life into the novel. There are exotic settings around the world (and in fantasy realms) throughout, and each one is written to evoke its own individual mood for the reader and the characters situations.

Karou is a kick-butt girl, but is struggling with feeling lonely as she discovers that the world with the “monsters” she thought she understood is not what she was led to believe. As she interacts with Akiva, the angel she encounters on one of her errands, it becomes obvious that she has some kind of pull toward him, and he to her. Little does she know that even as he tries to destroy all she holds dear, he might actually hold the key to her figuring out who (or what) she really is – what she’s been seeking to find out for awhile. Toward the end as we discover, along with Karou, what has really happened, it is shocking in the best possible way for a novel.

This is definitely a fantasy book for fans of fantasy. It has a unique take on the angel mythology and the backstory and world Laini has created is entrancing. Pre-order it now so you can escape into Karou’s world in September! I know I’ll be anxiously waiting for the next book indicated by the “…to be continued” ending to delve back into the artistry and uniqueness of the story Laini Taylor has created.

Elizabeth Eulberg is one of my favorite authors when I want a guaranteed enjoyable book (we bonded over our cheeseheadedness) and have been a huge fan of all of her books since I first read THE LONELY HEARTS CLUB. Then came PROM & PREJUDICE, followed by TAKE A BOW, and the latest, REVENGE OF THE GIRL WITH THE GREAT PERSONALITY. So I was thrilled when I heard that Elizabeth’s latest book was set in Wisconsin (finally!) and even more excited when I was able to get an early copy of BETTER OFF FRIENDS to read in September. And let me tell you, I was up early the next morning to keep reading the book because I couldn’t stop thinking about Macallan and Levi. When I finished later that day, I declared it Elizabeth Eulberg’s best book yet. And now (well, tomorrow) you get to read it, too! We Wisconsin bloggers were so excited that Elizabeth’s launch part would be in Milwaukee, and I knew I had to be a part of the blog tour. And the best part? Elizabeth is visiting my school today!

Reviews:

“…a pitch-perfect rom com. With a nod to When Harry Met Sally, rising YA romance writer Eulberg situates relatable characters in realistic situations. There’s depth, too… A humorous and cozy story about friendships and relationships, and the oh-so-fine line between them.”
– Booklist

“Reminiscent of When Harry Met Sally, Eulberg’s account of an evolving relationship offers witty banter interspersed with pangs of unrequited love. …their roller-coaster relationship provides plenty of entertainment and romantic thrills along the way.”
– Publishers Weekly

“Can a guy and a girl ever really be friends, as in ‘friends, but just friends?’ This is the question that animates this delicious, delightful romantic comedy. Readers will devour each chapter, narrated in Macallan’s and Levi’s alternating voices, correct in their confidence that Eulberg is going to deliver on her promise of an enormously satisfying story.”
– Children’s Literature

Backstory:

Better Off Friends came from a conversation my editor, David Levithan, had with one of his colleagues, Erin Black, who said she was looking for a YA story like When Harry Met Sally… that grapples with that age old question: can a guy and a girl really be just friends? When David mentioned it to me, I called dibs.

Over the course of a year (while I was writing Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality), I thought about how I could tell the story in a fresh way. I went back toWhen Harry Met Sally… and loved that it’s a story that takes place over a long period of time so you can really see the relationship develop between those two characters. So I knew that I wanted Better Off Friends to be over the course of a few years as well as have little moments of the characters bantering throughout the book so the reader can see right from the beginning the kind of friendship they have.

I began to slowly develop the characters of Macallan and Levi, and map out their friendship through five years. When I began writing the book, I decided on a whim to have it set in Wisconsin, which ended up becoming a character of its own. As someone who grew up in Wisconsin, it was fun to set a book in a place that I have such affection for. This also provided me with countless ways to insert my love for the Green Bay Packers (from Levi’s last name, Rodgers, to the various teachers names throughout the book). GO PACK!

Writing this book was a lot of fun, but it also made me cry in a few places. I’m really proud of Better Off Friends and hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

Thanks to the generosity of publishers at NCTE & ALAN, I ended up with a second copy of the ARC for THE INVENTOR’S SECRET, and Andrea generously signed it for me to use as a giveaway on the blog.

In a nutshell, ALIENATED is the story of
valedictorian Cara Sweeney, who gets more than she bargained for when she
agrees to host the nation’s first intergalactic exchange student, the gorgeous
but emotionally-stilted Aelyx (pronounced A-licks) from planet L’eihr. The tone
is light and humorous, but I explore some deeper themes as well.

ENDANGERED by Eliot Schrefer was my favorite YA book of 2013. When I heard that he was going to be writing a whole series of books on the four great apes, I was so excited because I love his writing so much. I was able to get an early copy of the second one about chimpanzees, THREATENED, at the NCTE Convention, and then they had copies available at ALAN also since Eliot was on a panel there. Hearing him speak about his research process for his books, I was inspired to tweet this thought:

After the panels at the ALAN Workshop, the authors are available for silent signings. Since I had two copies of THREATENED, I asked Eliot to sign the second one for a giveaway on my blog, which he was happy to do.

A bit about THREATENED…and the entry form below.

Into the jungle. Into the wild. Into harm’s way.
When he was a boy, Luc’s mother would warn him about the “mock men” living in the trees by their home — chimpanzees whose cries would fill the night.
Luc is older now, his mother gone. He lives in a house of mistreated orphans, barely getting by. Then a man calling himself Prof comes to town with a mysterious mission. When Luc tries to rob him, the man isn’t mad. Instead, he offers Luc a job.
Together, Luc and Prof head into the rough, dangerous jungle in order to study the elusive chimpanzees. There, Luc finally finds a new family — and must act when that family comes under attack.
As he did in his acclaimed novel Endangered, a finalist for the National Book Award, Eliot Schrefer takes us somewhere fiction rarely goes, introducing us to characters we rarely get to meet. The unforgettable result is the story of a boy fleeing his present, a man fleeing his past, and a trio of chimpanzees who are struggling not to flee at all.

Because The Carpenter’s Gift is my second project with Habitat for Humanity, people
sometimes think the two books are linked. They’re both about Habitat, right? But that
isn’t how I see them. The first book I wrote is about Habitat and the people who work
with it; but The Carpenter’s Gift is about something else. It’s about me, and maybe it’s
about you, too.

My association with Habitat began in 2008, when I received a call out of the blue asking
me whether I’d like to collaborate on a book celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of
the annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project. I had heard of Habitat, of course,
but I really knew very little about the organization beyond its association with housing.
As a presidential historian, however, I knew quite a bit about Jimmy Carter, and it took
me only about thirty seconds to recover and say yes. The result was If I Had a Hammer:
Stories of Building Homes and Hope with Habitat for Humanity, published in the fall of
2009.

In researching If I Had a Hammer, I had an important early decision to make: should I
volunteer as part of my research or not? After some back-and-forthing, I decided against
volunteering because I didn’t want my experience to color the stories that other people
were telling me about their experiences with Habitat. So I waited until after the book
was written before traveling to Chiang Mai, Thailand, to volunteer with the 2009 Carter
Work Project. Having talked to so many people about the Carter builds, I thought I knew
what to expect. But there is still a great difference between listening to a description of a
rollercoaster ride and taking the plunge oneself.

It turned out to be a good thing that I postponed volunteering, because my experience in
Thailand gave me a lot to think about. Working hard for ten or more hours a day with two
thousand other people, building a community of eighty-two homes that didn’t exist the
week before, is so thrilling while it’s happening that it inevitably raises the question, Why
can’t my life be like this every day?

Returning from Thailand, I took advantage of the Thanksgiving break to collapse on the
living room couch for a few days. While I dozed, my young children watched holiday
television. One night, they turned to the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.
Having grown up in Manhattan, I’d visited the tree many times, and from my Habitat
research I knew that since 2007, Tishman Speyer, the owners of Rockefeller Center, had
donated lumber milled from each year’s tree to build a Habitat home. As I watched the
lighting with my kids, I thought about this remarkable gift and realized that it could be
the touchstone for a different kind of story about Habitat—one that expressed what I had
thought and felt in Thailand.

When I interviewed President Carter for If I Had a Hammer, he told me something that
has stuck with me ever since. He said that the distance between the haves and the have-
nots in our society is so great that no single person can span it by himself. The president
called this gap a “chasm,” and he said that the only way to cross it was over a bridge. He
started the Carter Work Project, he said, because Habitat provides exactly this kind of
bridge, allowing people from both sides to come together and connect with one another in

a mutually redeeming way.

President Carter’s insight helped me to make sense of my own experience with Habitat
and thereby inspired The Carpenter’s Gift, which is fundamentally a story about giving
and receiving. Material resources change hands in the story, and they’re certainly
important, but much more important are the feelings that pass between the characters.

For me, the great joy of writing is the opportunity it gives me to express myself. Because
I write primarily history, most of what I express in my work are ideas—intellectual
constructs that attempt to make sense of what has happened and explain why events tend
to take the course they do. With The Carpenter’s Gift, however, I had a chance to express
something else—a feeling, which is altogether different from an idea.

I’ve often thought that people become attached to books for one of two reasons: either
the book teaches them something they don’t know, or it reminds them of something they
already know but have forgotten. Whichever is true, beloved books inspire readers to
become better people. It’s my hope that The Carpenter’s Gift can have a similar effect,
helping young readers learn something they may not know about giving and receiving
and helping older readers remember something they may have forgotten.

Around the World
by Marissa Moss

I’ve lived in Paris and Rome, each a wonderful experience. Living in a foreign city broadens your sense of who you are and how you want to live in ways that are delightfully unpredictable. In both cities, I explored the cultural riches in a way you can’t during a brief visit, but more than that, I learned the rhythm of a different lifestyle. There’s no such thing as rushing in Rome, no sense of urgency – or, frustratingly – of efficiency. You learn the Italian shrug of acceptance.

Travel in general demands that kind of flexibility. Planes are delayed. Connections are missed. A drive into the Amazon jungle that was supposed to take five hours ends up taking ten because roads have been washed out. But being open to what happens during travel mishaps means you end up having tea with Bedouins in Petra or are invited into a house-raising for a newly married couple in Vietnam. I love the expected parts of travel, the amazing sites, the great art, but I also love the completely unplanned, the moment you have to be open to in order to experience it.

I’ve been to more than 30 countries. The ones that have been the most difficult, have also been the most rewarding – India, Peru, Vietnam, Jordan, Egypt. I hope I can keep adding to this list. I’d love to see Indonesia, South Africa, Namibia, anywhere new. But the place I keep going back to, the city that has my heart, is Rome. Must be the gelato.
Now that the sequel, LIES THAT BIND, is out (and is also great fun like the first book), Lisa & Laura Roecker have a little bit to say about what’s going on.

school. Her best friend died for their secrets, and there’s no way
she’ll let them get away with it twice. It’s up to quirky outsider Kate
The One Way to Keep a Secret is by Using a Dead Language

by Lisa & Laura Roecker

     There are
three girls in the Roecker family and when each of us turned thirteen, we were
sent to board at an all-girls’ school in upstate New York. It was within these
prep school’s walls where we first fell into secret-society-like all-girls’
clubs. This experience is no doubt the inspiration behind not only Pemberly
Brown, but the secret societies as well.

     Just kidding.

     All of us
graduated from Solon High School. Picture scuffed tile floors, institutional
grey walls and those uncomfortable chair/desk units that make your butt fall asleep.
Solon was a fabulous school system and we were more than prepared for college,
but we wore regular clothes, hung out with regular people and learned regular
things (Latin? Um…no). We weren’t exactly infiltrating secret societies in
order to solve the mystery of our best friend’s death. More like applying
concealer to the gigantic pimple on the tip of our nose.

     But that’s the
whole point. Pemberly Brown is for all the girls (and boys!) out there who go
to those boring high schools. Anything can happen at PB and every time we write
a new story, the school grows larger and a bit more magical. Kate stumbles upon
the Sisterhood and Brotherhood in THE LIAR SOCIETY because we wanted to play
around with sororities and fraternities at the high school level as well as
hazing and competitiveness. The
societies stand for everything Kate wants to destroy because they inadvertently
killed her best friend, but you’ll see in THE LIES THAT BIND, the struggle she
faces when she’s not sure who to trust. She gets it wrong. She’s not perfect.
And even though she’s fighting much greater problems than we faced in high
school, she’s relatable and fun. Plus, she makes us thank our lucky stars we
weren’t sent away to that boarding school in upstate New York.

Yay, it’s the end of May Giveaway!
Being a teacher, the end of May is always an exciting time, so I decided to celebrate with a giveaway!
I recently read and reviewed REVIVED by Cat Patrick (you can read my review here).

Reading Cat’s second book (after last year’s FORGOTTEN), convinced me that she’s an author whose future books I’m going to want to keep an eye out for. I really enjoy her contemporary romance stories with a sci-fi twist.

I want you all to read and enjoy her books too, so I’m giving away an ARC of REVIVED (thanks to Little, Brown School & Library). Enter using the Rafflecopter form below, and comment to let me know what second books have led you to add an author to your own “authors to watch out for new books from” list.

-must be at least 13 to enter

I happened to pop into the overview of my blog in Blogger in Draft this weekend, and noticed that I had gotten close to 100 followers. I mentioned on Twitter that if I got to 100 before my one year blogoversary giveaway ended, I’d do a giveaway for a copy of Enclave, and sure enough, it happened, so here’s the giveaway:

To celebrate 100 followers, I’m having a giveaway of a hardcover copy of Ann Aguirre’s ENCLAVE!

I became aware of this title in the spring when I was doing my Dystopian Book Club unit. Ann offered copies to teachers on twitter, and after I responded and told her I had a blog, she sent me more than one. I gave some to teacher friends, and then saved one to host a giveaway here, and what better occasion?

Summary:
WELCOME TO THE APOCALYPSE

In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they
survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’
has trained into one of three groups–Breeders, Builders, or Hunters,
identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has
wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.

As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels
outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading
ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her
whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful,
brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner,
Deuce’s troubles are just beginning.

Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and
harshly, and Fade doesn’t like following orders. At first she thinks
he’s crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear
the elders don’t always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be
telling the truth. Her partner confuses her; she’s never known a boy
like him before, as prone to touching her gently as using his knives
with feral grace.

As Deuce’s perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant
battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only
due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy… but the
elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the
enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter
how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from
the only world she’s ever known. (from Goodreads)

It’s my One Year Blog Anniversary (& you get the present)!!!

In anticipation of the start of last school year and wanting to have a central place to put my thoughts about books to share with my students to get them more motivated to read, I started this blog on August 10, 2010. Little did I realize how much I would enjoy doing this, and the connections I would make with authors, publishers, teachers, and other bloggers through this process.

I’ve had so much fun, and one of my favorite parts of doing this book blog over the past year was getting my custom design from fellow book blogger @loriimagination of Use Your Imagination Designs. See my post here to read my thoughts after launching the new look.

Lori was awesome to work with and gave me a blog personality to match what I wanted and fit me so well. So…to celebrate my first year of blogging and one of my favorite parts, I’m hosting a giveaway for a free custom blog design for one lucky winner!

GIVEAWAY DETAILS:
One person will win a custom blogger blog design package from Lori at Use Your Imagination Designs:

Including: Custom header, custom background, link bar, signature, blog button with code, custom rating system for reviews, custom colors to match new design and installation.
(If you win, you’re welcome to communicate with Lori to upgrade at your own cost.)

CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED. THANKS TO ALL WHO ENTERED!!! Oh, and if you have any thoughts about my blog design, I’d love to hear them in the comments so I can pass them on to Lori.
