For the past couple of years, I’ve been participating in Cathy & Mandy’s #pb10for10 event to celebrate picture books that are must haves for my classroom to share with students. Plus, I love seeing what books everyone else has on their lists-I always find new books to check out.

This past school year, inspired by Donalyn Miller’s #bookaday for teachers during breaks, I decided to start a #classroombookaday daily picture book read aloud with my 7th & 8th graders. I introduced it on my teaching blog, and then presented on it at #nErDcampMI. I’m super excited that so many teachers are joining in committing to reading aloud a picture book to their students each day of the school year!

My #pb10for10 list this year is ten of

my new favorite picture books that I am most excited to share

with my classes when we get back to school in September.

BEYOND THE POND by Joseph Kuefler

I finished reading the F&G of this at ALA at actually wished I was still in school to read to kids.

MARILYN’S MONSTER by Michelle Knudsen, ill. Matt Phelan

Thank you, Franki, for introducing this book to me! Another one I was wishing I had middle schoolers around to read it to right away. Pair with Beekle.

WILD ABOUT US by Karen Beaumont, ill. Janet Stevens

I think this one will be my first day of school read aloud this year to talk about being ourselves and being accepting of others’ differences and why it makes them special.

If they don’t understand unreliable narrator after this…

FLOAT by Daniel Miyares

Loved PARDON ME last year, & Miyares’ new wordless book is oh, so lovely!

THIS IS SADIE by Sara O’Leary

Some students might need this story.

I’M TRYING TO LOVE SPIDERS by Bethany Barton

A great example of fun voice in informational writing + it’s hilarious!

My students love the crayons, and I so loved this new one!

NINJA BUNNY by Jennifer Gray Olson

Last year’s NINJA! by Aree Chung made my students’ top 10, so this will be a hit.

I adore the look of this book & am eager to discuss the grass isn’t always greener theme with my students.

And a bonus book..

because I already read it to my students last year, but it’s a new favorite (for my students and me), so I want to make sure people know about it!

I have been making a concerted effort to read more picture books in the last year, and with my work on the Wisconsin State Reading Association’s (WSRA) Children’s Literature Committee, it has given me even more reason to. And then, when I found out I would have an additional 10 minutes for each class period this coming year, I decided I would do a picture book #bookaday read aloud each of the 178 days that I see my students this coming school year. That’s a lot of picture books I need to know. Even more reason to share in my #pb10for10 post. Last year, since it was my first year participating, I chose to make the list my favorites. This year, I decided to think back on all the books I’ve read this year that are 2014 releases and do a list of my Top 10 Favorite Picture Books of 2014 (so far).

THE SNATCHABOOK is a cute picture book about a small town where all of the animals’ books and bedtime stories are disappearing. Today I get to share a guest post from the author and illustrator in response to my question: Where did you come up with the idea for this
picture book, and if/how did it change through the revision/illustration process? You can read their responses below (with early sketches of the artwork and what the main character might have looked like as a different animal…or even human!)

Helen: The
idea of a book thief who steals children’s bedtime stories popped into my head
at the end of a long day of trying (and failing) to think up interesting
storylines. At first I wasn’t sure what this book thief would be like,
or what to call him, so I played around with names; the book cruncher? The book
snatcher? These seemed to suggest quite a menacing character, which wasn’t at
all what I wanted, so I tried inverting the words – and that’s when the
Snatchabook was born. As soon as I had named him, an image started to form in
my mind of a pitiful, lonely little creature who just needs someone to read to
him. Once I had established his character, I soon saw the potential to
develop the story as a mystery with plenty of suspense and a brave heroine to
confront the thief.

In my original version, Eliza was going to be a
human girl (called Eliza Jones) and Burrow Down a village. However, our UK
publisher, Alison Green, was very keen for Eliza and the other inhabitants of
Burrow Down to be woodland animals, as she felt this would have more universal
appeal. Looking back, it’s hard to imagine it any other way now! Apart from
this, the changes to the text were very minor (by the time I sent it to the
publisher I had already worked through several drafts myself), but it was great
to have such an experienced editor to help guide the story gently in the right
direction.

Tom: As occasionally
happens, my idea for the Snatchabook as a creature came very easily and hardly
changed at all. However, since Helen originally imagined Eliza as a girl, my
first sketches of her were very different from how she eventually turned out.
It soon became clear that she was going to be an animal and I tried her out
various creatures (my
favourite being a Badger) before we arrived at a rabbit. How
Eliza was going to look was probably the biggest change that took place for me
working on this project and it all happened quite early on. So once that had been decided, it was a
question of working through the possibilities of a woodland community and
designing all the houses and their inhabitants. This was loads of fun as I grew
up in the countryside and had always loved playing in the woods near our house.
I also really enjoyed adding the visual stories to the amimals that run
independently to Helen’s text, like when they are all accusing each other of
stealing the books. I did make quite a lot of tests to work out how exactly I
was going to paint the twisty trees, falling leaves and windswept skys and these
all helped me add the suspense to the illustrations without making them scary.

Since I want to focus on keeping things positive for my reading recommendations, and I couldn’t really think of enough ideas for this week’s official Top Ten Tuesday topic, I decided to create my own.

I made it a priority to read more picture books starting this summer (I ended up reading almost 100 from the time school ended to the time it started again). As I’m using them more and more in my middle school classroom, I wanted to have a greater exposure to a variety of titles myself so I can make a more informed decision for the ones I share with my students. These are the ones I’m adding to my “picture books I need to get for my classroom” list for numerous reasons. Some fit unit ideas I have, some fit into units I already teach, some fit author studies, some are informative, some are useful as mentor texts, some have themes I want my students to be thinking about, some will help build classroom community, and some are just plain fun. *I’ve highlighted some other books over the summer, so this list is beyond those.

It’s the 4th Annual Picture Book 10 for 10, hosted by Cathy Mere & Mandy Roebek, and I’m so glad Cathy invited me to participate because I’ve been making it a priority to focus on reading picture books this summer, and am excited to share some that I love the most.

This was really hard to narrow down to a top 10 (as it always seems to be for me with books of any kind) and these are in no particular order. Some are old favorites I’ve used with students, and some are new favorites I’m looking forward to sharing with my students this year, and all make me smile and touch on themes I want my middle schoolers to think about and discuss.

I want to make a big impact with the read alouds I choose for the first day of school. Yes, I read picture books to my 7th & 8th graders. I want a quick text that we can all share to start creating our classroom community in a positive way. I want my students to see the value and depth of picture books no matter how old they are. I want my students to know I will be reading aloud to them throughout the year (not only to model fluency, but because we are never to old to appreciate a read aloud). I want my students to continue to have fun experiences with reading and enjoy a book all together. I want the message I send on the very first day of school to be one of a love of reading and appreciation of literature in all of its forms. Picture books let me do everything I want to do on that first meeting with students.

This summer I made it a goal to read more widely in the picture book area. Previously, the book I shared with students on the first day of school was THE NAME JAR by Yangsook Choi. The power of that book for me was that I could share a personal story about the importance of names, that it is every child’s right to be called by their name (in whatever variation that may be) and have it pronounced correctly as a part of their identity, it’s written by an author who has personal stories about adapting to a new culture, it’s a beautiful book and story, and it is a great segue into introductions and my making sure I have the correct name and pronunciation for each of my students.

This year is the first time that I will have a group of students for the 2nd year in a row, so it was time to decide on new first day of school read alouds for my incoming 8th graders (who I taught last year as 7th graders – I will probably still use the same one I’ve used before for my incoming 7th graders because I like the message it sends about building our community from the start). The great thing is that I won’t have to waste any time in getting to know you activities because we all know each other already, so we can jump right into the learning and reading. In thinking about all of the picture books I read aloud to this group last year (and there were many) and all of the new ones I’ve found this summer, and what I know about this class of students from last year and their group dynamics, I realized I wanted to tailor the theme of the books I chose to what I think they need and what I want to focus on from the start of their 8th grade experience. What I realized is that there were three picture books I read that all related to themes of friendship, supporting each other, and courage. Thus, my first day of school read alouds for my 8th graders this year. *I’m also very much looking forward to being able to rethink this every year for my incoming 8th graders based on what I know about that group and how I want to start our year.

This year I will start with:

THE STORY OF FISH & SNAIL by Deborah Freedman

BOY + BOT by Ame Dyckman

ART & MAX by David Wiesner

I especially love that when I tweeted this list out, Deborah and Ame expressed their excitement that I was reading aloud picture books to 8th graders…and even more so this:

If you haven’t read any of these, I highly recommend that you do. Happy reading!

What are you planning on reading to your students for the first day of school? How are you deciding?

This week is my daily listing of my Top Ten lists (in no particular
order – it’s hard enough for me to limit it to ten!) of the Best Books
I’ve Read this year in different categories.

Day four is so exciting for me because I rediscovered my love of picture books this year, especially using them in the classroom, and as such, I read many, many more than in previous years. Because of this, I was actually able to put together a Top Ten that I think represents some of the best. If you
haven’t read these, you should definitely add to your To Be Read list!

Disclaimer: I read a lot of books this year, but there are still so many picture books I didn’t get to. This is by no means an
exhaustive list of the quality picture books that came out in 2012.

THE MONSTERS’ MONSTER is a charming picture book that is beautifully illustrated with a message about expectations, appreciation, and gratitude. Patrick McDonnell writes with a sense of humor to his three little monster characters in their names, words, and actions. The book seemed to be starting off headed in one direction, and then once the monster came alive, it went somewhere else than I expected, which is one of the reasons that it was such an effective book. Although the little monsters who are trying to be “real” scary monsters wish it were different, the one they’ve created just isn’t about that. He’s thankful to have been brought alive, shows gratefulness to those who did something for him, and wants to appreciate the beauty of the world he is now able to see. McDonnell’s story pairs wonderfully with his delightful illustrations, starting in the dark and gloomy monsters’ castle down to the neutral town and ending in the bright beauty of the beach at sunrise. I am a fan of Patrick McDonnell’s picture books, and THE MONSTERS’ MONSTER has risen to the top of that list.

Because The Carpenter’s Gift is my second project with Habitat for Humanity, people
sometimes think the two books are linked. They’re both about Habitat, right? But that
isn’t how I see them. The first book I wrote is about Habitat and the people who work
with it; but The Carpenter’s Gift is about something else. It’s about me, and maybe it’s
about you, too.

My association with Habitat began in 2008, when I received a call out of the blue asking
me whether I’d like to collaborate on a book celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of
the annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project. I had heard of Habitat, of course,
but I really knew very little about the organization beyond its association with housing.
As a presidential historian, however, I knew quite a bit about Jimmy Carter, and it took
me only about thirty seconds to recover and say yes. The result was If I Had a Hammer:
Stories of Building Homes and Hope with Habitat for Humanity, published in the fall of
2009.

In researching If I Had a Hammer, I had an important early decision to make: should I
volunteer as part of my research or not? After some back-and-forthing, I decided against
volunteering because I didn’t want my experience to color the stories that other people
were telling me about their experiences with Habitat. So I waited until after the book
was written before traveling to Chiang Mai, Thailand, to volunteer with the 2009 Carter
Work Project. Having talked to so many people about the Carter builds, I thought I knew
what to expect. But there is still a great difference between listening to a description of a
rollercoaster ride and taking the plunge oneself.

It turned out to be a good thing that I postponed volunteering, because my experience in
Thailand gave me a lot to think about. Working hard for ten or more hours a day with two
thousand other people, building a community of eighty-two homes that didn’t exist the
week before, is so thrilling while it’s happening that it inevitably raises the question, Why
can’t my life be like this every day?

Returning from Thailand, I took advantage of the Thanksgiving break to collapse on the
living room couch for a few days. While I dozed, my young children watched holiday
television. One night, they turned to the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.
Having grown up in Manhattan, I’d visited the tree many times, and from my Habitat
research I knew that since 2007, Tishman Speyer, the owners of Rockefeller Center, had
donated lumber milled from each year’s tree to build a Habitat home. As I watched the
lighting with my kids, I thought about this remarkable gift and realized that it could be
the touchstone for a different kind of story about Habitat—one that expressed what I had
thought and felt in Thailand.

When I interviewed President Carter for If I Had a Hammer, he told me something that
has stuck with me ever since. He said that the distance between the haves and the have-
nots in our society is so great that no single person can span it by himself. The president
called this gap a “chasm,” and he said that the only way to cross it was over a bridge. He
started the Carter Work Project, he said, because Habitat provides exactly this kind of
bridge, allowing people from both sides to come together and connect with one another in

a mutually redeeming way.

President Carter’s insight helped me to make sense of my own experience with Habitat
and thereby inspired The Carpenter’s Gift, which is fundamentally a story about giving
and receiving. Material resources change hands in the story, and they’re certainly
important, but much more important are the feelings that pass between the characters.

For me, the great joy of writing is the opportunity it gives me to express myself. Because
I write primarily history, most of what I express in my work are ideas—intellectual
constructs that attempt to make sense of what has happened and explain why events tend
to take the course they do. With The Carpenter’s Gift, however, I had a chance to express
something else—a feeling, which is altogether different from an idea.

I’ve often thought that people become attached to books for one of two reasons: either
the book teaches them something they don’t know, or it reminds them of something they
already know but have forgotten. Whichever is true, beloved books inspire readers to
become better people. It’s my hope that The Carpenter’s Gift can have a similar effect,
helping young readers learn something they may not know about giving and receiving
and helping older readers remember something they may have forgotten.

Title: I SAY, YOU SAY OPPOSITES
I say reading, you say fun! This book of opposites is colorful, playful
and encourages interactive learning through basic techniques like
prediction and repetition. But really, most importantly, it’s super,
duper, crazy fun and everyone in the whole family will enjoy it. With I Say, You Say, your little ones can: say new words, recognize opposites, and learn and play!

I SAY, YOU SAY OPPOSITES is a little different than the typical picture book I recommend as it is definitely aimed at a much younger audience, but it was so much fun I wanted to share it. While this book is not one that I would probably use in my middle school classroom (unless as a model text to create their own version of these books to read to younger graders – hey, I’m actually kind of liking that idea; I might just do that.), it was such a cute book to read with my young niece and a great one to share for anyone who has little ones.

The illustrations are cartoonish and bright colored and fun. It even has a lift-the-flap design, which is so great for interactiveness with little kids. The illustrations have an energy to them overall which kept the book moving and the interest of the little kids reading it, while showing variety and diversity. They’re definitely learning as they read this one, and the concept of opposites, with the appropriate pictures to back it up, is one that is beneficial to little kids. The repeated phrasing also allows kids to predict what might be coming next as they learn their opposite concepts.

So far there are two books in the series, with I SAY, YOU SAY ANIMAL SOUNDS also available now. These will definitely make it into my “baby shower” book buying stack.

This is the year that I truly realized that my students from this point forward will not have any memory of the September 11th terrorist attacks from their own lives. It will officially be history for them. This is the year that I truly realized the importance of non-fiction picture books…those that tell the true stories in a way that is accessible to children (even middle school age!) and engaging and provides a method of inviting them into a conversation about events that can sometimes be hard to understand or process or talk about. Books allow that conversation to happen by opening those doors. These are the picture book read alouds I use for 9/11. Both have stunning illustrations and stories that are powerful in their own way. One for the day of bravery and helpfulness of strangers; the other for the interconnectedness of our global society and the way in which small gestures can be meaningful and the importance of understanding other cultures. I would love to hear what other books you’re using to share the stories of 9/11.

unusual ceremony begins in a far-flung village in western Kenya. An
Many will be profoundly touched, but for Americans, this selfless
pretends everyday things (like the sandbox) are extraordinary places
(like the desert and the pyramids of Egypt). Isabella ends the day in
her own home-sweet-home, the most wonderful place to be.

I have not read MY NAME IS NOT ISABELLA, but I’ve heard good things about this purple-haired girl, so when I saw that Jennifer Fosberry would be signing copies of this sequel, ISABELLA: GIRL ON THE GO, at the Sourcebooks booth at ALA, I knew I had to go check it out. I’m so glad that I did. Isabella is a fun, sassy, and smart young girl. As her father keeps asking her to help with the various chores on their list for the day, Isabella continually says she’s not in the place he thinks, but in some special place around the globe that is somehow related to the ordinary place she’s standing in her backyard.

Jennifer Fosberry has created picture books which have stories kids can laugh about, but also include social studies related terms and ideas that are incorporated throughout-this time with significant global locations. Even better, especially for use with older kids, is the glossary at the back that includes extensive detailed explanation of each of the places that is mentioned in the story. The illustrations are endearingly adorable as well, and further highlight the strength of the relationship between Isabella and her father in this story. He has unending patience for her imagination and plays along each time she switches to a different place she claims to be. I appreciated that the father is willing to let her be creative and helps show how important creativity can be to learning.

I will share this with my nieces and nephews, but can also see using it in the classroom as a jumping off point for students to create their own stories modeled after Isabella highlighting important places around the world that they’ve learned about in social studies class.
