October 2021
Fairy/Folk Tales and nursery rhymes are classic for a reason. They have withstood the test of time – though they may have had some alterations or been Disney-fied over the years – and show up often in curriculum and classrooms. One of my favorite sub-genres is the twisted or fractured tales. Seeing the creative and unique ways authors approach telling these familiar tales in new, updated, humorous, contemporary, and exciting ways is always interesting. And we should not only use the “classic” tales we may be most familiar with in the United States. Cultures around the world have tales that are familiar to many – or can become so through sharing the right picture book with our students. I hope you enjoy this month’s booklist and find some new Tales with a Twist to share during your #ClassroomBookADay read alouds this year!

Check out this video of my conversation with Bethan Woollvin, author/illustrator of some of my favorite fairy tale twists! I was thrilled to be able to chat with her about her books, her inspiration, and what’s next. Thank you, Bethan, for the delightful conversation!

When our young hero settles in to read, the last thing he wants is for some noisy animals to ruin the ending of the story.
But ruin it they do.
And as it turns out, the boy is quickly approaching a surprise ending of his own! Maybe he should have listened to the animals after all. . . .
This silly, timeless picturebook with a clever meta twist introduces debut author Minh Lê’s witty text and Isabel Roxas’s eye-catching illustrations.

For Picture Book Month back in November, I booktalked some of my favorite new picture books and shared via video. In case you missed it over on Lit Perks. Although my job situation has changed, and I’m now an independent contractor doing literacy consulting through BALB Literacy Consulting, I didn’t want you to miss out on some of these great recommendations.

There is such power in reading aloud, sharing experiences with text, and celebrating the joy of picture books in all grade levels. I hope you gain some inspiration and find some new-to-you titles to add to your collection and share with students no matter what grade you teach.
