In My Mailbox – New Books This Week (37)

September 25, 2011

In My Mailbox is a posting idea run by Kristi at The Story Siren (read all about it here: In My Mailbox)
for bloggers to share the books they’ve gotten that
week to help publicize as many titles as possible. It’s a
little preview on what book reviews to anticipate along with
a way to build excitement about new titles coming out.
All titles link to goodreads so you can add books to your
“to-read” list.

Bought
This week I bought quite a few books because of author signings/events I went to (Lisa McMann-who is so nice and fun & Anderson’s YA Lit Conference). It’s always good to support the bookstores bringing in these authors!

THE UNBECOMING OF MARA DYER by Michelle Hodkin
Of course I had to get the pretty finished copy of this one! It officially releases on Tuesday, but because the fabulous Michelle was at the conference, they had signed copies available. I can’t wait to read this one again and see if I can spot the differences from the ARC, but mostly, I’m excited to go back into this world that I loved so much the first time around. You’re aware of my obsession with it greatness, right? (If not, this might be the first time you’re visiting my blog, so peek around a little bit:))

FADE (DreamCatcher #2) by Lisa McMann
I started reading the first book, WAKE, before I went to her event and got hooked (and kind of adore Cabel) and had to read through the rest of the series in a couple of days!

GONE (DreamCatcher #3) by Lisa McMann

CRYER’S CROSS by Lisa McMann
I’ve heard a lot of positives about this one, and now that I know a bit of the story behind it, I’m even more intrigued to read it.

THE UNWANTEDS by Lisa McMann
Her middle grades dystopian/fantasy (I’m partway into it and it’s fabulous!). Actually bought one for myself/classroom and one for my nephew!

SECRET SATURDAYS by Torrey Maldonado
This one sounded like a really good middle school appropriate book.

ONLY ONE YOU byLinda Kranz
Really sweet picture book I’ve read before and saw on the shelf, so wanted a copy to share with my students.

Won

CLAIRE DE LUNE by Christine Johnson
I actually won one of the door prizes at the conference and this was the book in my bag. I’ve heard it’s a good werewolf story, so I’m excited to have it to read.

She was at Anderson's (In Naperville, IL) 8th Annual Young Adult Literature Conference. And she is awesome in person.

School's out for summer & the weather was perfect School's out for summer & the weather was perfect for reading outside this weekend. Couldn't resist choosing this YA romantasy touted as "Taylor Swift's 'Vigilante Sh*t' meets The Gilded Age" for my first summer break read!

Finding moments of joy where I can. There are two Finding moments of joy where I can. There are two days left of this school year. A year that started with sitting in the corner crying due to the overwhelm of the massive task ahead of us to get ready for the first day upon walking in & seeing the state of the library after summer renovation work. A year of ups & downs & all arounds. All the way to today when we had the giddy joy of our brand new booktrucks being delivered. They are pretty & sturdy & glide smoothly & elevate the look of the whole library while making our lives easier. Farewell old, dented, wobbly, rusty, beige carts. IYKYK. Bahama blue, turquoise, teal, sundrop, & calming lavender are taking over. Thank you for the colorful options, helpful customer service, & quick response shipping before school ends @demcoinc!!

Love this reminder of the power of children's lite Love this reminder of the power of children's literature from the introduction in Show & Tell: Exploring the Fine Art of Children’s Book Illustration! Reading it this weekend to continue building background knowledge for my work on the Caldecott Committee this year.

"In this regard, we truly suffer from an embarrassment of riches. Children's books have never looked better or been more
important. They are one of the few quiet places left where a child can go to be alone, and to travel worlds past, present, and future. They are often the first place children discover poetry and art, honor and loyalty, right and wrong, sadness and hope. And it is there between the pages that children discover the power of their own imaginations. They are indeed a dress rehearsal for life."
