#pb10for10 2019 | Ten New Picture Books Honoring Family

August 10, 2019

I always love participating in Cathy & Mandy’s #pb10for10 event celebrating picture books and providing many fabulous #classroombookaday choices! I inevitably end up with a longer wish list and shopping cart and a maxed out hold list at my library. So get ready, and then go check out other educators lists today back at Reflect & Refine!

I’ve been thinking a lot about family this summer. With everything going on at the border and kids being separated from their families when seeking asylum, to kids who have been tragically lost in mass shootings or suicides, to some reflections around the reading about students of color and kids in poverty and trauma and the impact on families… they all have me thinking about my attitude toward, and assumptions I may make about, those who love those precious little lives in our buildings.

So with this year’s Picture Book 10 for 10 list,
I wanted to celebrate the sense of family in new & upcoming picture books,

in honor of the little humans I have the privilege to work with at school,

and those who love them and leave them in our charge each day.

I noted a few books, Jillian, have already read some & loved them, like My Papi Has A Motorcycle & Tahe & Flood's First Laugh, Welcome Baby. My class and I visited and created weavings with a group of Pueblo Native Americans one year and they told us of the tradition of First Laugh, were then waiting to see who might be the one! It's a special book. Thanks for all of them.

Wonderful list, Jillian! Aidan is on my first weeks of school list too, and The Proudest Blue and Bilal are definitely ones that will be shared early in the year too.

    Jillian,
I'm always so happy to see that you are joining our #pb10for10 celebrations. (And I love the way you have linked all of your past years in this post!!!!) What a great collection you have here. Books about family always help to ease little ones back into school. There were several new to me titles in this collection. I'm busy requesting them now!

    Thank you,
    Cathy

Finding moments of joy where I can. There are two Finding moments of joy where I can. There are two days left of this school year. A year that started with sitting in the corner crying due to the overwhelm of the massive task ahead of us to get ready for the first day upon walking in & seeing the state of the library after summer renovation work. A year of ups & downs & all arounds. All the way to today when we had the giddy joy of our brand new booktrucks being delivered. They are pretty & sturdy & glide smoothly & elevate the look of the whole library while making our lives easier. Farewell old, dented, wobbly, rusty, beige carts. IYKYK. Bahama blue, turquoise, teal, sundrop, & calming lavender are taking over. Thank you for the colorful options, helpful customer service, & quick response shipping before school ends @demcoinc!!

Love this reminder of the power of children's lite Love this reminder of the power of children's literature from the introduction in Show & Tell: Exploring the Fine Art of Children’s Book Illustration! Reading it this weekend to continue building background knowledge for my work on the Caldecott Committee this year.

"In this regard, we truly suffer from an embarrassment of riches. Children's books have never looked better or been more
important. They are one of the few quiet places left where a child can go to be alone, and to travel worlds past, present, and future. They are often the first place children discover poetry and art, honor and loyalty, right and wrong, sadness and hope. And it is there between the pages that children discover the power of their own imaginations. They are indeed a dress rehearsal for life."
