Back-to-School Picture Books 2019 #classroombookaday Recommendations

August 20, 2019

When considering picture books to recommend for #classroombookaday read alouds, one consideration I use is time of year or what may be happening in schools. Back-to-school time is when I think carefully about what those first read alouds of the year might be – those books that will help set the tone for the classroom community for the school year…. I inevitably end up with a longer wish list and shopping cart and a maxed out hold list at my library. So get ready, and then go check out other educators lists today back at Reflect & Refine!  I’ve been thinking a lot about family this summer…. Read More

Introducing #cbadspotlight & the 2019-20 Monthly #classroombookaday Selections

July 12, 2019

#classroombookaday is celebrating it’s 5 year anniversary this summer! I’m amazed this small thing I started in my 7th & 8th grade classroom back in 2014, to bring Donalyn Miller’s #bookaday into the classroom with a daily picture book read aloud, has grown into something thousands of educators are joining in on with their own students.  With all the conversations… Read More

Webinar Recording – Building Community with #classroombookaday Read Alouds

May 31, 2019

Sharing about #classroombookaday is always a joy for me. I couldn’t have imagined back in 2014, when I started it inspired by Donalyn Miller’s #bookaday challenge for teachers, how it could have grown and spread to classrooms across the country. The impact of this simple idea, reading aloud a picture book every day of the school year, is beyond what… Read More

Sharing the Heart to Offset the Hate in the Headlines: Books From Muslim Authors

Sharing the Heart to Offset the Hate in the Headlines: Books From Muslim Authors

March 25, 2019

With the news about the terrorist attack on mosques in New Zealand, my mind went to books I could share with students. The books that would help them better understand the wearing of a hijab. The books that would help them better understand what it means when they hear the word Muslim or Islam. The books that would help them… Read More

ANOTHER – Wordless Picture Book(s)

March 8, 2019

I love wordless picture books! When I heard Christian Robinson was debuting his first book as author & illustrator, I was excited to see what it would be about. When I heard it was a wordless picture book, I was even more intrigued. And ANOTHER does not disappoint. Evoking a sense of wonder with its playfulness and creativity, there is… Read More

Finding moments of joy where I can. There are two Finding moments of joy where I can. There are two days left of this school year. A year that started with sitting in the corner crying due to the overwhelm of the massive task ahead of us to get ready for the first day upon walking in & seeing the state of the library after summer renovation work. A year of ups & downs & all arounds. All the way to today when we had the giddy joy of our brand new booktrucks being delivered. They are pretty & sturdy & glide smoothly & elevate the look of the whole library while making our lives easier. Farewell old, dented, wobbly, rusty, beige carts. IYKYK. Bahama blue, turquoise, teal, sundrop, & calming lavender are taking over. Thank you for the colorful options, helpful customer service, & quick response shipping before school ends @demcoinc!!

Reading it this weekend to continue building background knowledge for my work on the Caldecott Committee this year.
"In this regard, we truly suffer from an embarrassment of riches. Children's books have never looked better or been more
important. They are one of the few quiet places left where a child can go to be alone, and to travel worlds past, present, and future. They are often the first place children discover poetry and art, honor and loyalty, right and wrong, sadness and hope. And it is there between the pages that children discover the power of their own imaginations. They are indeed a dress rehearsal for life."
